Five songs to think twice about

If you watch movies you hear music. Those two things tend to go together except in certain films that make a point of having no music just to be contrarian. The soundtrack of a movie is a part of the movie, helping the film to evoke the correct emotions and response from the audience at crucial times. Certain songs that have been recorded by popular (or not so popular) artists tend to be used quite a bit as they bring memories to the viewer that allow them to empathize with the characters of the film.

Who can forget the scene in Reservoir Dogs where Stuck In The Middle With You by Steeler’s Wheel plays while Mr. Blonde tortures Marvin? That scene changed the feeling of that song for many people, forever.

But what happens when a song is used to great effect but that song isn’t what you think it is? More often than not thanks to the power of editing a filmmaker can chop up a song and make it fit the story they are telling.

Automatic Nasty Astro-Creep Stardust

What happens when a guy goes from some of the crappiest pop made to hard rocking? He gets compared to Jimi Hendrix.

Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way

Lenny Kravitz has had an interesting career with the charts. Besides being called Mr. Lisa Bonet (don’t remember her? she was the hot Cosby kid) he had a hit with this annoying song: Read the rest of this entry »

The Anthology Superstar’s Appetite for an April Fool’s Aquarium

There are probably more songs about the usage of marijuana, hidden within the lyrics, than any other topic outside of sex. Anyone who thought the following by a group of kids was about anything else but pot was high themselves.

Musical Youth - Anthology

Originally done by the Mighty Diamonds (as Pass The Koutchie), this version (Pass The Dutchie) was indeed changed to talk more about those having no food and living in poverty, but it is still a cannabis song at the core. Read the rest of this entry »

Amnesiac ramblings of hot blue guitars, anarchy, and justice for all with anthems while I feel fine

Radiohead is one of those bands that you are supposed to like, but they always felt like a band that was just on the cusp of being something special yet not able to get quite where they belong.

All The Best Hits The Right Money Can Buy

As promised in the mission statement of this website, I am putting out a “guilty pleasure” in the list.

The first season of American Idol is the only one I watched all the way through. The second season bored me after the audition process due to the, well, boring contestants. Every season after that got worse until the point where I no longer care or watch. I think I got through maybe four seasons of auditions before I just gave up entirely.

For my money Nikki McKibbin was the better rocker of the first season group, but Kelly Clarkson did have something.

Unfortunately her first album, while a major seller, is not what could be called the greatest thing she would ever put out.

Her latest album, All I Ever Wanted, isn’t that great of an album either.

Kelly Clarkson - All I Ever Wanted

Kelly Clarkson - All I Ever Wanted

Every song on this album sounds like the request of a teenager on the radio. A teenager playing the most idiotic game of “break up/make up” in high school you ever saw. The lyrics are nothing more than pandering to that age and mindset. There is no growth from Kelly as an artist, which is something we did see on the previous two albums.

Shorty Goes To Hell With Alien Love Secrets

No one can deny the success that Weird Al Yankovic has had in his career. Starting out sending tapes to Dr. Demento for his radio show, then finally getting some recognition on radio. Yet, he was still considered a novelty act and wasn’t given the time of day as having any staying power. Look at his predecessor and influence in the parody/funny song genre; Allan Sherman had a handful of hits then pretty much disappeared from active parody.

Al was written off as perhaps being able to have two albums worth of material before fading into the background. The sales of his second album being poor didn’t help. Yet, here he is so many decades later and still pumping out parodies, including his first ever #1 single.

I think the first time I ever got introduced to Weird Al was because of UHF, his wonderfully done parody movie with a plot. It was running as the weekend movie on the local NBC affiliate and I happened to catch it. As young as I was I got most of the references and laughed way harder than I should have. This would also be my long descent into becoming a geek later in life, mind you.

It wasn’t until later in life, with the album being discussed here, that I got into Al’s music directly. It was all because of one track.

There are quite a few different styles of parody on this album. Prince has never allowed Al to record a parody of his music, but Traffic Jam is a complete Let’s Go Crazy style parody. There is the one parody that annoys everyone as much as the original and that is Achy Breaky Song, a parody of Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus (for the young-uns, that be Miley Cyrus’ daddy).

Genie, how long do we have to go until we are at the dawn of the age of Aerosmith?

Don Henley, former singer for The Eagles, had a pretty damned good solo career. He created a number of song staples stemming from the 1980s. I remember seeing the music video for The Boys of Summer played on VH1 quite a bit.

He also released The End Of The Innocence, which is one of the most played songs on Easy Listening radio ever.

What first got me into listening to Don Henley? A movie called Real Genius that stars Val Kilmer, back when he was still a comedic actor. The song All She Wants To Do Is Dance is played within the film.

A’s, B’s, and ABBAs

I am not sure when or where I first heard Soundgarden. It could have either been an episode of Beavis & Butt-head or through KRQR 106.7 Z-Rock FM in the NorCal valley. I am thinking it had to be Z-Rock as my family hadn’t had satellite in years, and the cable we had did not have MTV.

Around this time I was in my freshman year of high school and living in a gated community. Before anyone gets the wrong idea this was not your ideal, Hollywood gated community where you were welcome with open arms because you could afford to live there. No, this was your “we are better than everyone because we live three miles from any form of civilization” suburb. You were shunned if you weren’t part of their clique, derided if you didn’t allow everyone to know your business. Not a fun place.

I was living in a house there with my father, sister, Evil Step-Mother and Evil Step-Sister. To make a long story short I had lived with my grandparents from the age of two, but my grandfather decided to go off the deep end a bit more than usual and attacked my grandmother. My father came in, took my sister and I, and we ended up in another type of hell. (I call her Evil Step-Mother for a reason.)

Around this time I started getting into heavier music then my usual Bon Jovi pop-rock stuff but any incoming music was limited. As stated above the cable we had in that house didn’t have MTV. We had VH1, which served its purpose, but at the time it was adult contemporary music only so no alternative or metal type music. At 4pm everyday it would switch to Comedy Central so there were no late night viewings. As well, the Evil Step-Mother didn’t think that MTV was a good influence because of “the fast moving images” and sexualization of people. This from a major druggie was a bit hypocritical.

I know now that Soundgarden had been around for ten years by the time I had heard of them, and that Chris Cornell had helped produce and sang on Alice Cooper’s The Last Temptation album, but it was in that year of 1994 that I first heard Black Hole Sun which got me to dig a bit deeper for their music. I bought the Superunknown album (discussed much later) but it wasn’t until 1997 when I bought the A-Sides album that I actually heard any of their earlier stuff.
